Texas Citizens on Gun Legislation
According to a survey conducted by the University of Texas at Tyler and by The Dallas Morning News, a majority of the population in Texas want added layers of legislation to address the recent increase in gun violence. Not only do the majority of Texans want additional legislation, but they want it now. With just over half the number of Texans polled stating their belief that Texas is headed in the wrong direction politically, it is clear they potentially need to elect someone new into office.
Close to two-thirds of Texans want their Governor, Greg Abott (R), to call a special session of the Texas Legislature in response to the recent mass shootings. There are a lot of questions when it comes to gun legislation, but I believe the best way to achieve a healthy balance is to open up the door that leads to constructive debate for both sides. Over three quarters of the 1.384 Texas voters surveyed agreed that the age limit for a semi-automatic rifle should be lifted from 18 to 21. Additionally, about half of those surveyed agreed that they would support a mandatory program where the government would buy back these weapons from those who own them.
